UN partners in first ANU International Organisations Day

The United Nations and the Australian National University (ANU) strengthened their partnership in August by kicking off the inaugural careers fair for international organisations.

Held on campus at the ANU, the event featured keynote speeches from United Nations’ representatives. In a first, the ANU live streamed the United Nations career presentation to 10 other Universities across Australia, enabling hundreds of students to hearabout career options within the United Nations system.

Students located in other states were able to tweet in any questions to UNIC Canberra Twitter to maximize their involvement.

Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Peter Van Laere flew in from South Korea to speak to students.

He spoke in detail about career opportunities with the United Nations – with a particular focus on the 2011 Young Professionals Programme exams taking place in December this year, for which Australian graduates are eligible for the first time in many years.

A careers fair was held in between speech sessions, enabling students to speak to representatives from international organisations about career options. UNIC Canberra and UNHCR staff from the Canberra office were on hand to inspire the students and give practical career advice.
