Canberra launch of the "Lessons from Rwanda" exhibit

The second leg of the travelling "Lessons from Rwanda" exhibit was officially launched in Canberra on the 21st of July by the UNIC Director Mr Christopher Woodthorpe, Harold Wilkinson, Treasurer of the United Nations Association of Australia and Dr. Peter Londey, Lecturer at the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Having previously been displayed in Brisbane the Canberra launch of the exhibit was well attended by around 50 people at the busy Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre.

The exhibit, which forms part of the Outreach Programme on the Rwanda Genocide and the United Nations, presents an account of the events taking place before, during and after the genocide. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the lessons to be learnt from those events, the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and other judicial mechanisms in ending impunity and the lasting impact of genocide on survivors.

The exhibit was launched in New York at UN Headquarters on 30 April 2007 and has subsequently been displayed in Burkina Faso, Canada, Colombia, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, the United States and Zambia.

After Canberra the exhibit will then travel to Adelaide where it is expected to go on display in December. For more information about the exhibit please visit http://www.un.org/preventgenocide/rwanda/
