The United Nations Association of Australia’s Victoria Division held the 2010 UNAA World Environment Day Awards Presentation Dinner at the Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne on 4 June, 2010. 2010 marked the 11th anniversary of this prestigious event with over 250 people in attendance.
United Nations Information Centre Director Christopher Woodthorpe attended the event to deliver the Secretary-General’s World Environment Day message and to present an award.
The Kimberley Toad Busters for the Community Group were the recipients of the award for their Cane Toad Control project, which aims to stop the migration of cane toads into the Kimberley Region
The World Environment Day awards showcased a diverse range of inspirational environmental initiatives, conservation projects and awareness-raising activities occurring around the Australia.
The Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme won the Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award, which supports indigenous communities who are finding local solutions to tackle the negative effects of fishing net debris on native marine life.
