The Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs Irina Bokova, visited Australia in the first week of May, as guest of the Australian Government to
speak at the International Launch of World Press Freedom Day.
The following week, Mrs Bokova visited the Noosa Bioshphere, Kuranda Village and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.After travelling in Queensland, the Director-General visited Canberra, where she attended meetings with the Hon. Peter Garrett , Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts, Professor Penny Sackett, Chief Scientist and senior government officials.
UNIC Canberra in partnership with the Australian government, held a public event at which Mrs Bokova
spoke about UNESCO, its work and its challenges for the future. She then travelled to Sydney and met with the Parliamentary Secretary for International Development, Mr Bob McMullan before touring the Sydney Opera House and flying out of Australia.
