The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives.
On June 4, UNIC Canberra in collaboration with the Australian National Botanical Gardens and the Canberra Institute of Technology launched a photography competition in order to raise awareness of biodiversity issues and plant conservation.
The competition, the first of its kind in the Australian Capital Territory, will involve tertiary photography students creating a portfolio of photographs centred on the theme of ‘threatened species”.
The portfolio’s will be assessed as part of the student’s coursework and then will be presented to the general public by way of a major exhibition hosted by the Australian National Botanical Gardens, in December.
After the exhibition, the winners of the competition will receive unique photographic internships with the United Nations Mission in Timor Leste, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, the Australian Capital Territory government and the Canberra Times newspaper.
Running concurrently with this project, UNIC Canberra has also developed a biodiversity educational kit for primary school children, which incorporates a power point and lesson plan and is another key element in our biodiversity awareness campaign.
