What you can do - a page for younger people

There are many things you can do to make the world a better place.  Taking an interest in, and widening your knowledge about other people is a very good place to start.  The following are just a few suggestions:

Expand your horizons...

Participate in a UN Model United Nations

Visit UNdata for the most up-to-date country profiles and additional data on a wide range of issues.

Explore the stories, see the videos, and play the games at UN Works for People and the Planet

See what you can add to your knowledge from UN Cyberschoolbus

Help reduce poverty...

Participate in Stand Up Take Action
!

  Visit
Millennium Development Goals site for young people and read how you can get involved.   Watch the video too!

Care for the environment...

  Twitter for Trees

Join the campaign to plant 7 billion trees by the end of 2009. Enter your tree planting pledge to help reach this goal and sign up on UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign website to register the trees you'll plant. UNEP will provide a running tally of the results online while it coordinates specific tree planting efforts in different countries around the world.

Become involved in activities like 'Clean up Australia Day' or form your own nature club with friends, and clean up the neighbourhood.

Use paper wisely. Write on both sides and if you throw it away, put it in the paper recycling bin.

Throw your rubbish in the bin, especially when you visit the beach or parks.

Save water. Turn off taps and if you find a leaky tap or pipe, let somone know so that they can get it fixed.

Consider human rights...

Get to know people whose lives look different to yours.Think about people who live in your neighbourhood and who you go to school with. Learn about their backgrounds and what makes them who they are. You may find you have many things in common.

Make the world a friendlier place.  Try to... SMILE!
