Africa is the only region in the world to have been singled out for priority treatment by the General Assembly. In 2010, the United Nations is incorporating Africa-interest angles in all its campaigns. For example:
-
the food crisis - the UN is calling for support for Africa's farmers and the development of the agricultural sector;
- the global economic slowdown - its impact on Africa’s economic development and its chances of reducing poverty on the continent;
- disarmament and stopping the spread of small arms;
- climate change - the impact is already being felt in Africa. There is concern about the resources required to address its impact and how Africa’s economies can develop in environmentally sound ways;
- gender - the campaign to end violence against women, improve women’s economic and social standing and involve men as partners in change;
- health - including ways to prevent the spread of tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS and expand access to treatment.
